An astronomy radio show in Haiti, to raise awareness of astronomy as a science and engage with the Haitian general public.

  Outreach, Astronomy

Astronomers Without Borders is running a global fundraising project called the BIG (Big Impact Giving) Project. The aim of this program is to help organisations and clubs raise funds to help them achieve their astronomy-related goals. These are microfunding campaigns, where the value is limited to a maximum of $500 USD (plus fees and charges). For a lot of clubs a small amount of money can make a big difference.

The following is by Dr Rulx Narcisse, the founder and president of the Haitian Astronomical Society. Dr Narcisse is an OBGYN and has had a passion for astronomy since childhood. He has studied a lot in astronomy and has obtained many certificates from online training courses on variety of astronomical topics:

The Société Haïtienne d’Astronomie (SHA) are a nonprofit group fighting for astronomy science in Haiti since 2013. We would like to add a radio show to our activities for 2016.

This funding obtained from this campaign would allow us to run the radio show for 6 months. We plan to have have a one hour a week, radio show about astronomy.

The global objective is to raise public awareness and knowledge about astronomy as a science. Some people hear about astrology predictions on radio and think astrology and astronomy are the same thing. Some people think astronomy is based in religion, and some even think that astronomy is not for poor and in trouble as we are in Haiti.

And this is the objective of the SHA. With this project we plan to educate the Haitian public about basic astronomy. This may also stimulate young Haitians to be more interested about science in general and astronomy particular.

Program Plan

The global plan for the show is to focus on one topic per month, which will allow for 4 shows on each theme.

Month 1: Astronomy as a science

Month 2: Solar system

Month 3: The Moon

Month 4: Constellations

Month 5: Stars

Month 6: The Universe

Each show would be for one hour (60 minutes) with the following schedule:

10 minutes for updates on astronomical news

35 minutes for presenting the main subject

15 minutes for interaction with the public. Including question and answer, with prize giveaways for audience members.

The timing will not be very rigid, since we hope to obtain ads to support the prolongation of the show, beyond what this campaign will allow us to do.

We plan to start as soon as we obtain the funds and can pay the radio station. We have confirmed with a radio station in Deschapelles, Haiti, they will assist us with the broadcast.

We plan to follow up with interested parties by inviting them to discuss show ideas with us at our headquarter or public meetings we organize.

  Risks and Challenges

Most of the work has already been done on this project. The radio station is confirmed, and the schedule is organised. We are just waiting for funding.

The biggest challenge will be continuing the program after the 6 months is up. We hope to secure advertising to help with this. Any additional funds raised over the target will be used for this purpose too.
